Fashion trends seem to change on an almost weekly basis, with the styles out of date by the time you’ve had chance to pop to the shops to buy them. It seems that the cake decoration industry is following suit, with various designs and styles proving to be particularly popular, many of which would look right at home on the catwalks.
A bakery based in Derbyshire in the UK has found that the more vintage, elegant styles of wedding cakes are proving popular with British brides, and the colour purple is the must-have.
Luke Evans Bakery, founded more than 200 years ago, also revealed that the recent royal wedding has inspired couples to return to the traditional, intricate designs of wedding cakes. Sharon Dance, who has made wedding cakes for the Derbyshire company for 18 years, said in an interview that “Purple was a popular colour in 2011, and that’s already showing signs of continuing in 2012. The most popular shape is the round version, with couples opting for brighter, bolder designs.
“The trends tend to go around in circles,” she continued. “It’s a bit like fashion, with the younger couples who haven’t seen the styles before thinking they’re new designs, making them popular again. Having said that, there are always new influences and designs as bakers get more creative.”
There have been a lot of new styles of wedding cakes in recent years, with brides moving away from the old-fashioned tiered, white cakes, and opting for innovative versions that reflect the personalities of the bride and groom. For instance, many are choosing cupcake towers, and if they are choosing tiered cakes, they’re choosing different fillings for each layer, with fruit, chocolate and sponge the popular options.
