At Christmas time, schools are always doing something. Whether it’s the traditional nativity play at the local church, or the more modern Christmas production (complete with the mixture of donkeys, aliens and superheroes), or having baking competitions to help raise funds for the school. These baking competitions or sales are often quite fiercely contested, with pride at stake for some mums, so using the best available cake decorations could be the ‘X Factor’ that turns your cake from an also-ran into a winner.
With countless fairy cakes and cookies it can be quite difficult to create something that isn’t going to look like everything else on the table, meaning you have to take the three boxes of cakes you made home with you and ‘force’ yourself and your family to eat them.
While the recipes and ingredients may not vary too much from a constant routine, the decorating side of baking is where you can put an individual touch on everything you make. Using icing and cake decorations, you’re able to use a cake like an artist would a canvas, and create a real work of art.
There are hundreds and thousands of different decorations available, (see what I did there), and you could even use different forms on all of your cakes. Just because you’ve made fairy cakes with pink icing doesn’t mean that they all have to have the same decorations on the top. Experiment!
You could use a Christmas cutter set for instance and make each of your cakes into a pattern that gets people into the mood for the holidays. Alternatively, try something like Christmas cupcake cases or use the holly and berry edible sprinkles to really set the cakes off and make them stand out.
